Design Features

Features:
Features:
  • Examples of acceptable pool finishes are stainless steel, tile, concrete, and/or Gunite. Pool bottoms must be smooth so as not to abrade spa guest’s feet yet slip resistant.
  • Pools may be fully recessed into the floor, partially recessed, or set above the floor. Aesthetically, recessed installations are preferred but may not be possible due to structural or budgetary limitations. At situations where pools are set above the floor, always maintain code required head height above the stairs for the guests getting into and out of the pools.
  • Pool depths range between .9 to 1.2m (3’ to 4’).
  • Provide pool depth markers as required by code. Ensure depth markers are visible, but inconspicuous in the design of the pool finishes.
  • Methods of entering and exiting the pool vary depending upon project conditions. Ensure that safe and slip resistant stairs or ladders are available with appropriate handrails. Conform to all local building codes.
  • Consider interactive water features such as; swan neck shoulder showers, laminar jets, sheeting waterwalls, or fountains.
  • Provide underwater lighting. Consider Chroma therapy lighting if compatible with project goals.
  • Consider underwater speakers.
  • Include a focal feature at pool area. Consider the ceiling when planning the design.
  • Utilize interesting materials to create a memorable experience. Provide non-slip surfaces.
  • Provide equipment operation and life safety signage at appropriate locations.
  • Locate all controls in the back of house space to be controlled by spa employees and/or engineers.
  • Locate emergency shut-off controls as required by local codes.
  • Install robe hooks adjacent to all pool areas.
  • Locate adjacent a towel station.
  • When pools are present provide swim suit water extractor at locker areas.
Whirlpool:
  • Water temperatures between 38-40 degrees Celsius (100 to 104 degrees F).
  • Provide benches along the perimeter with a minimum depth of 45-60cm (18”-24”).
  • Typical bench heights are 45cm (18”) H.
  • Provide a variety of different underwater jets such as shoulder, neck, back, and foot jets.
Vitality Pool:
  • Water temperatures at approximately 34-36 degrees Celsius (93-96.8 degrees F). Water temperatures at the vitality pools are usually lower than whirlpools.
  • The seating in vitality pools consists of linear perimeter benches, individual loungers, or semi-circular forms all comprised of stainless steel bars. These are generally referred to as air loungers or bubble beds.
  • Typical bench heights are 45cm (18”) H but multiple heights may be offered to create various experiences.
  • Vitality pools do not typically have underwater jets. The massaging features are created through the use of effervescent air bubbles released under the benches and loungers.
  • Consider the use of neck massage cannons, spouts, fans or rain features.
Cold Plunge:
  • Frigidarium is another term used to describe the cold plunge pools. This term originated in ancient Rome.
  • Water temperatures between 8-25 degrees Celsius (47-77 degrees F).
  • Users do not typically spend a substantial amount of time in this pool; as a result these pools are typically very small and accommodate 1-2 guests.
  • Cold plunges are utilized after the hot amenities to cause rapid constriction of the capillaries stimulating circulation.
Outdoor Pools:
  • When possible provide pools at exterior areas such as gardens and terraces.
  • Resort locations may require the specification of a dedicated full sized outdoor pool.
  • Depending on the local climate a heated pool may be required.
  • Ensure lounging areas are available adjacent to outdoor pools. Provide a combination of covered and uncovered seating options.

Equipment
  • Pool Equipment Room: Provide an adjacent utility room to remotely locate the pool equipment. Provide access from a back of house area for maintenance. Typically pool equipment can be rather large. Ensure adequate space is accounted for in the space program. Provide adequate acoustical separation if located adjacent to guest areas.
  • Pool Equipment: Specify a commercial equipment system as recommend by the fabricator. Install the required, water supply, inline water softening system, a floor drain, and the necessary electrical supply. Provide blocking within the partition for wall mounted equipment. Water filtration systems are vital to the proper function and maintenance of the pool system. Ensure adequate filtration systems are in place.
  • Consider pipeless jet technology to eliminate harmful bacteria and maintain a hygienic spa experience.
  • Provide whisper quiet jets.
  • Install in-line water heaters as required to maintain water temperatures.
